Balance helped Cambridge run out to a big lead in the first half and balance helped the Blue Jays hold on for a 43-29 victory over rival Deerfield in a non-conference girls basketball game Saturday night.

Mayah Holzhueter scored 10 points for Cambridge to lead all scorers. Meghan Bolger scored nine points and three other Blue Jays each scored eight points.

Cambridge made 9 of its 24 free throws in the game — normally a recipe for disaster. Deerfield made 6 of its 14 shots from the free-throw line.

Freshman Steffi Siewert scored eight of her team-high nine points for Deerfield (9-5) in the second half as the Demons outscored Cambridge, 24-23. Deerfield was unable to complete the comeback against the Blue Jays (6-7), who have won five of their last seven games.

Cambridge will continue its season at home Thursday against Marshall at 7:30 p.m.

Jenna Shrader scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the second half as the Belleville Wildcats earned a 53-44 victory against host Cambridge in a Capitol South girls basketball game Friday night.

Cambridge had a 19-17 lead at halftime. Shrader and teammates Ava Foley and Callie Smith scored 26 of their 37 points in the second half. Taylor Stenklyft scored 13 points to lead Cambridge and Olivia Williams added 11 points. Williams scored 9 of her 11 points in the second half.

Belleville made four of its five 3-pointers in the second half. The Blue Jays made three 3-pointers in the game.

Olivia Williams scored 16 points and Gracie Korth added 12 as the Cambridge Blue Jays earned a 42-39 victory over host Wisconsin Heights in a Capitol South girls basketball game on Tuesday night in Mazomanie.

Williams made a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 of her team-high points in the first half.

Korth and Mayah Holzhueter led the charge in the second half for the Jays. Korth scored 8 of her 12 and Holzhueter scored 7 of her 9 in the second half.

The Blue Jays won the close game despite getting outscored, 13-7, from the free-throw line.

Ashlee Adler scored 12 points to lead Wisconsin Heights.

After having their six-game winning streak snapped by state-ranked Shullsburg the Demons returned to their winning ways with a 41-36 Trailways South Conference win at Madison Abundant Life/St. Ambrose on Jan. 14.

Ezzell’s 12 points were a team-high, while Haak and Grace Brattlie each added eight in the victory.

Maeya Bakke and Addy Schmiesing led the Challengers with 14 apiece.
