The Deacons’ Dryden Van Schoyck leads off first base against Montello last Sunday.

For the first time this season, the DeForest Deacons baseball team has dropped back-to-back games.

After falling 12-10 to host Portage a week prior, the Deacons suffered their first home loss after dropping an 8-4 decision to the visiting Montello Granite Jaxx last Sunday.

It was a revenge game for Montello, which fell 17-5 to DeForest on May 12.

The Deacons are now 4-4 in the Home Talent Eastern Section. They are in fourth place behind Sun Prairie (7-1), Poynette (5-2) and Monona (4-2).

Last Sunday’s loss was a tough one for the Deacons, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

DeForest controlled the action in the first half of the game, starting with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Julian Edwards led off the bottom of the second with a home run to right field.

The Deacons pushed two more runs across home plate in the bottom of the fourth.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Weston Knutson delivered a single to center field to score Dryden VanSchoyck and Ryan Dauman.

DeForest’s lead grew to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth after a two-out solo home run by Edwards.

The Granite Jaxx erased the deficit with a five-run rally in the top of the sixth inning. Curtis Morgan drove in the first two runs with a double, while Nate Andrews, DJ Raasch and Shane Ryan had consecutive run-scoring hits.

Montello scored a run on an error in the top of the seventh.

The Granite Jaxx closed out their scoring with a two-run double by Cody Ryan in the top of the eighth frame.

DeForest out-hit Montello 10-9, but was hurt by three errors.

Michael Johnson, Edwards and VanSchoyck each had two hits for the Deacons.

Colyn Buss pitched the first six innings for DeForest and had nine strikeouts and a walk in taking the loss.

Taylor Mack and Brett Vomhof each had a walk in relief.

Shane Ryan led Montello with three hits.

Curtis Morgan got the pitching win for the Granite Jaxx. He had eight strikeouts and a walk in seven innings.

Ryan pitched the final two innings for Montello and had five strikeouts and a walk.

The Deacons will be on the road this Sunday. They will play in Monona at 1 p.m.

DeForest will play two Eastern Section games the following weekend. The Deacons will play in Columbus at 1 p.m. on June 29 and will host Portage at noon on June 30.
