After having its regional title streak snapped after three straight last season, the fourth-seeded DeForest softball team was back in the mix for a WIAA Division 1 regional crown this year.
The Norskies kicked off the 2019 postseason with a 13-3 win over Madison East on May 20.
“We really opened the game up in the fourth inning by putting some quality at bats together,” DeForest coach Jerry Schwenn said. “In particular, our five stolen bases put a lot of pressure on their defense.”
In the regional championship game on May 23, the Lady Norskies slipped past fifth-seeded Holmen 4-3.
“Our sectional is stacked with high level teams and certainly we are in that mix,” Schwenn said. “Knocking off a 20-win team in Holmen is another huge win for this team. I’m so proud of how we competed as a team. Our defense made some huge plays.”
It was a revenge win for the Norskies, who lost to Holmen at the sectional semifinal level in 2017 and 2016.
DeForest (23-4 overall) traveled to Verona to face the top-seeded Wildcats in the sectional semifinal this past Tuesday. A recap will be in next week’s Times-Tribune.
The sectional final is set for tonight in Verona at 5 p.m.
