Conference battle

Keagon Kaufmann pitched the first four innings in the Norskies’ loss to Waunakee.

The DeForest prep baseball team was unable to come up with enough firepower against Badger North Conference rival Waunakee on April 9.

The host Warriors out-hit the Norskies 12-4 on their way to a 9-3 victory.

The Norskies have dropped two straight games and fallen to 2-4 on the season.

DeForest was scheduled to host Waunakee on April 11, but the game was postponed due to bad weather. The game was rescheduled for May 21.

Waunakee set the tone with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nate Stevens highlighted the inning with a solo home run.

The lead grew to 4-0 after a home run by the Warriors’ Joe Hausser in the bottom of the second.

Waunakee also scored a run in the third before blowing the game open with a three-run outburst in the fifth. They closed with a run in the fifth.

DeForest had just one base runner reach third base through the first five innings of the game, but the Norskies finally broke through in the sixth. They scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning.

Cal Olson opened the scoring for the Norskies with a double to score both Jack Olver and Trey Kirchberg. Olver and Kirchberg led off the inning with back-to-back singles.

Justin Hausser followed with a ground ball to score Mason Kirchberg.

Olson had two of the Norskies’ four hits.

Joe Hausser, Nick Smith and Will Ross all had two hits for the Warriors.

Keagon Kaufmann pitched the first four innings for DeForest. He issued two walks and took the pitching loss.

Olson pitched the final two innings for the Norskies.

Smith, Hausser and Taiten Manriquez all pitched for Waunakee. They combined for 14 strikeouts and three walks.

The Norskies will play in Beaver Dam tonight at 5 p.m.

This Saturday, DeForest will host both Madison Memorial and Stevens Point starting at 10 a.m. The Norskies will then host Lodi on April 22 and Portage on April 23. Both games will start at 5 p.m.
