I am practically speechless at the level of disrespect leveled toward the teacher’s union in the June 4th article “Board adopts new teacher pay model.” First and foremost, the DeForest Area Educational Association (DAEA) is a union, not a former union. We are not remnants. We are not unofficial representatives. The DAEA leadership team consists of union members that were elected by colleagues to represent their interests. We pay dues, we hold meetings, we have elections, and we recently participated in the DASD scholarship awards as a donor to a 2015 graduate. The DAEA is affiliated with WEAC and the NEA and has one of the highest percentages of employee members in Dane County. How insulting to present such conclusions about the DAEA, its hard-working members, and its leadership team with such dismissive language.
