The Lake Mills FFA Chapter will be hosting a Field Day on Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., to recognize and thank the donors and supporters of their 2018 Lake Mills FFA Corn Test Plot. The event will be held at the site of the 5-acre Lake Mills FFA Test Plot, located on the Roger Wiedenfeld farm on Hwy B, east of Lake Mills. Lake Mills FFA Alumni members, as well as Lake Mills area farmers, community members, and supporters of the Lake Mills FFA are invited to attend.
The 2018 Lake Mills FFA Corn Test Plot was planted on May 24 with 22 different corn hybrid varieties. A student committee of Lake Mills FFA members conducted tillage, planted the FFA test plot, conducted management decisions and are organizing the field day, and upcoming corn harvest and data collection in November.
Lake Mills High School FFA students enrolled in agriculture classes taught by Luke Wiedenfeld, Lake Mills High School Agriculture Instructor and FFA Advisor, are using the test plot as a learning laboratory to apply classroom concepts and to conduct hands-on learning activities. Funds raised by the test plot are used to support leadership and educational activities for Lake Mills FFA students.
Attendees will have the opportunity to view the test plot, learn about Lake Mills FFA student activities, participate in agronomy educational activities and attend a short program to recognize and meet the donors to this year’s test plot. A hot dog and brat lunch is being provided by Lake Mills FFA members and Lake Mills FFA Alumni.
Lake Mills FFA members Trevor Messmer and Cody Ziebell will also have two tractors on display at the event. Both students received grants from the Titan Tires FFA Antique Tractor Restoration Program to aid in their tractor restoration projects. Ziebell has restored a 1941 Allis Chalmers Model C and Messmer is restoring a 1953 Massey-Harris 55 Diesel.
Donations to support this year’s Lake Mills FFA Corn Test Plot were given by the Lake Mills FFA Alumni, Roger Wiedenfeld, Dave Messmer, Troye Klecker, Adam Bols of Insight FS, David Smithback of Pioneer Seeds, Wayne Kassube of Waterloo Ag Service and Wyffels Hybrids, Adam Vanderpool of Landmark-Cottage Grove, Charlotte Luedtke of the DeLong Company, Inc., Charlie Untz-Mycogen, Scott Schultz-Neutech, Jeremy Chwala-Ag-Venture, and Kris Duffy of United Cooperative, Johnson Creek.
