Lake Mills own Citizen Advocates for Public Education will take part in a march to Madison June 22-25 to stand up for public schools in Wisconsin.

They will walk 60 miles for 60% from Palmyra to Madison. The March begins in Palmyra on June 22, moving through Fort Atkinson, Cambridge, Deerfield, Marshall and Sun Prairie, concluding at the Capitol on June 25.

“Our kids deserve a budget that fully funds their local public schools,” Sandy Whisler, president of the group, wrote in an email. “This includes 60% reimbursement of special education costs, which was cut from the budget by the Joint Finance Committee, along with $900 million in other public school aids, from the education budget proposal put forward by Gov. Tony Evers. By the end of the month, lawmakers will vote on a final budget and we want to see those funds restored.”

“We are marching 60 miles – from Palmyra to Madison – with parents, board members, school leaders and others to demand restoration of the $900 million cut from the proposed education budget. Wisconsin children will continue to suffer if the state once again lets them down with insufficient funding,” wrote Heather DuBois Bourenane, executive director of the Wisconsin Public Education Network, and Milwaukee Public Schools Board Director Megan O’Halloran in a joint statement.

Whisler says all parents, grandparents, community members and public school supporters are invited to participate. Marchers are invited to join along the way for as much or as little as they wish to walk, or to cheer marchers along throughout the day. Supporters can also march the final two miles from Madison East High School to the Capital on June 25, departing from the school at 1:15 p.m.

“You can also support the cause by donating supplies or making a financial contribution,” she wrote.

Those wishing to support more locally can join the group in Deerfield on Sunday to greet marchers coming from Cambridge around 5 p.m. CAPE is also looking for people to transport marchers from Deerfield to Lake Mills on Sunday, provide food for dinner on Sunday and for breakfast on Monday, transport marchers from Lake Mills to Deerfield Monday morning and see marchers off in Deerfield on Monday morning. Those wishing to help should email
