MADISON — Lake Mills junior Julianna Wagner and sophomore Gabby Mahr won their opening match at Thursday’s WIAA Division 2 state tennis tournament over West Salem’s Julia Krien/Josie Lajuenesse 6-2, 6-3 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Wagner and Mahr advance to today’s round of 16 at 12:30 p.m. against Xavier’s Kylie McCormick and Carly Bomier.

Wagner/Mahr are 24-3 on the season while McCormick/Bomier are 28-5.

Kroll/Legel advance

L-Cat seniors Makylah Legel and Mia Kroll beat Barron juniors Jada Brunkow and Phoebe Jerome 1-6, 6-4 (6) on Thursday to advance to the round of 16.

Legel and Kroll remain unbeaten on the season, improving to 28-0.

The tandem play next today at 12:30 p.m. against Luther seniors Phoebe Christenson and Jenna Wahl. Christenson/Wahl are the seventh-seeded doubles pair and have a 29-3 record.

Smith loses

Lake Mills senior Jena Smith lost her opening match to Kohler freshman Sarah Horth 7-6 (7), 7-5.

Smith falls to 24-5 on the season.

Horth takes on top-seeded Sarah Gesner today at 11 a.m.
