Junior Taylor Roughen scored a game-high 21 points to lead the host Lake Mills L-Cats to an 87-52 victory over previously unbeaten Watertown Luther Prep in a Capitol North girls basketball opener on Friday night.

Lake Mills and Luther Prep entered the Capitol North Conference opener with a combined record of 9-0. The L-Cats set a school record for points in the victory.

Lake Mills faced a double-digit deficit early on before ratcheting up the pressure and finishing the first half with the momentum before pouring in 46 second-half points.

“Luther Prep is a very talented offensive team. We fell down 10 early. With about 10 minutes to go in the first half, we turned up our intensity,” Lake Mills girls basketball coach Brandon Siska said. “The last 20 minutes we were smothering on defense, moving the ball and getting to the rim on offense. (Luther Prep) won on the road by double-digits at Waupun on Tuesday. This should be a huge confidence booster moving forward.”

Roughen came off the bench to make four 3-pointers — her minutes were limited after missing Tuesday’s game at Wisconsin Dells due to an ankle injury. Junior guard Julianna Wagner scored 16 for the L-Cats (7-0, 1-0 in conference), who were playing at full strength for the first time this season.

Junior center Vivian Guerrero added 14 and sophomore forward McClain Mahone and junior guard Ava Wollin each chipped in 10. Junior forward Jade Pitta scored nine for the fourth-ranked team in the Division 3 Wissports.net Coaches Poll which made nine 3-pointers and were 20-for-31 at the free throw line.

“Everybody played well on offense, we spaced the floor well,” Siska said. “We did an awesome job with spacing and sharing the basketball. We had some post ups and did a great job of attacking off the dribble.”

Luther Prep sophomore forward Grace Schmidt had 19 points and junior forward Lauren Paulsen, who battled foul trouble, added eight for the Phoenix (3-1, 0-1). Junior guard Grace Kieselhorst totaled seven points and sophomore forward Taylor Zellmer scored six.

Lake Mills hosts Fort Atkinson on Monday for a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m.

The L-Cats, who are ranked 4th in the Division 3 Wissports.net Coaches Poll held a 6-point halftime lead and ran more effective sets against the Dells’ zone defense after halftime.

“We shot the ball well in the second half, we figured out the high low against the zone they were running,” Lake Mills girls basketball coach Brandon Siska said. “Happy we knocked down some free throws. A bright spot for us was Ava Wollin. She knocked down some shots, had some deflections and steals.”

Lake Mills (6-0) junior forward Jade Pitta and junior center Vivian Guerrero each scored nine points. Sophomore forward McClain Mahone added seven and junior center Kayla Will tallied six.

“(Wisconsin Dells) is a young team, well-coached,” Siska said. “They outplayed us in the first half, wanted it more then we did. In the second half, we executed a little better. (Wisconsin Dells) missed some shots they hit in the first half and we played better defensively in the second half.”
