More about Mamre

Dear Editor,

I would like to add an addendum to the article, “Little white church starts as log church.” The Mamre log church at Aztalan State Park is located there through the efforts of the late Marvin Kirst and many, many volunteers. He led the effort to disassemble the log church along Highway Q, transport the logs to Aztalan and reconstruct the church in Aztalan State Park. He recruited Lyle Lidholm and made many contacts to get a site on which to rebuild the historic log church.

We thank the Aztalan Historical Society for making that effort possible. As the last pastor of the Lake Mills Moravian Church, Gene Glasser, stated in a letter to the editor to the Leader on July 29, 1999, “Marv was always there gathering workers, materials and tools to shape the project.”

A celebration of the 160th anniversary of the Mamre Moravian Church on Highway Q will be held on Sunday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dave Sobek leading worship.
