The Lodi and Poynette baseball team locked horns for the second time this season on May 2. The Blue Devils completed the season sweep with an 8-3 victory over the host Pumas.
“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole early in the game,” Poynette coach Alex O’Connor said. “We gave them too many free bases early, combined with some key hits, and found ourselves down 6-0. The second part of the game, I thought we turned it around and played better, just not enough to climb back in. Consistent defense from start to finish will keep us in ball games like this.”
Lodi (6-8 overall) is in second place in the Capitol North Conference with a 4-2 record, while Poynette (1-8) is 0-4 in conference play.
The Blue Devils set the tone with three runs in the top of the first inning. Finn Melchior had a double in the frame, while Connor Faust, Logan Richards, Carson Richter and Caden Harper-Beutel each had a single.
Lodi came up with a run in the second inning and added two in the third to go up 6-0.
In the top of the sixth, the Blue Devils went up 7-0 after Carson Possehl led off with a double and scored on a single by Gavin Burke.
Poynette scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Keller had a two-run single in the frame, while Colby Savich added an RBI single.
Lodi tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Possehl, Richards, Burke and Faust led the Blue Devils with two hits apiece.
Savich had two hits for Poynette.
Dustin Nordstrom and Melchoir combined for the pitching win for Lodi. They combined for five strikeouts and three walks.
Noah Stark and Kevin Gorman both pitched for Poynette and combined for four strikeouts and seven walks.
The Blue Devils will be at home this Friday. They will host Lake Mills at 5 p.m.
Poynette will also be in action on Friday. The Pumas will play at 5 p.m. in Columbus.

Lodi went up 2-1 after scoring two runs in the top of the third inning.
The Blue Devils scored the eventual winning run in the top of the fourth inning.
Lakeside cut the deficit to one with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Slater Fitzgerald pitched a complete-game three-hitter. He finished with five strikeouts and a walk.
Lodi had five hits.

Poynette had a seventh-inning rally come up just short in a non-conference loss to visiting Markesan on April 26.
After Markesan scored two runs in the top of the first inning, the Pumas got an RBI double from Stark in the bottom of the first.
Markesan scored two more runs in the top of the third.
The Pumas cut the deficit to 4-2 with a run-scoring single by Garett Lloyd in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Trailing 5-2, Poynette scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but left the tying run on first base. Parker Walstad had a two-run single in the seventh.
Austin Gray went 3-for-4 to lead the Pumas at the plate, while Mason Kilen had two hits.
Stark and Gorman both pitched for the Pumas. They combined for four strikeouts and two walks.
