It is early in the season, but the Lodi and Poynette baseball teams were looking to separate themselves in the Capitol North Conference when they squared off in Lodi on April 9.
The Blue Devils took a step toward contending for a conference title after downing the Pumas 9-4.
Lodi (3-4 overall) is tied with Lake Mills for first place in the Capitol North with a 2-0 record.
Poynette (0-4) fell to 0-2 in conference play.
The Blue Devils grabbed momentum with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. They scored two of the runs on balks.
The Pumas answered with a four-run explosion in the top of the second inning. Austin Gray highlighted the frame with a two-run double, while Noah Stark added a run-scoring single. Poynette also scored a run on a balk.
Lodi tied the game with a run off a pair of Puma errors in the bottom of the second.
The Blue Devils regained the lead for good with a run in the third.
Lodi started to gain some distance after plating a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
The Blue Devils put the game away with solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames.
Both teams finished with 11 hits, but the big difference was seven Puma errors.
Gray and Garett Lloyd both went 3-for-4 to lead Poynette at the plate. Both had a double, while Gray added two RBIs.
Stark finished with two hits..
Kevin Gorman and Mason Kilen both pitched for the Pumas. They had a combined two walks.
No individual stats were available for Lodi.
The Blue Devils will be back on the diamond tonight They will host Deerfield in a non-conference game at 5 p.m.
Lodi will make a trip to DeForest for a 5 p.m. non-conference game on April 22.
Poynette will be at home tonight, as it will host Westfield in a 5 p.m. non-conference game. The Pumas will Portage in another non-conference tilt at 5 p.m. on April 22

Before hosting Poynette, Lodi dropped a non-conference game to host River Valley on April 8.
