Virginia Mae “Ginny” Skarda

It is with great sadness that the family of Virginia “Ginny” Mae Skarda announces her passing at age 93 on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Lodi Good Samaritan Center.

After graduating from Poynette High School, Ginny married Don Skarda. They moved to the Lodi area where they raised seven children, nurtured many grandchildren and lived the remainder of their days. At a time when most wives were homemakers, she proudly worked for the State of Wisconsin Central Colony for the Disabled for 25 years. Ginny was active in the Lodi community as well. She was a life member of the Lodi Order of Eastern Star Queen Esther Chapter #4. She also aided youngsters as a Girl Scout leader and a 4-H leader.

Travel was important to her; she and Don journeyed within the U.S. and Canada regularly. She enjoyed reminiscing about a tour of four European countries taken with her husband and three of her children in 2000. She also was thrilled to visit Hawaii in 1972 with Don.

Ginny’s other favorite activities included gardening, crocheting heirloom quilts, watching the Brewers baseball team, donating to Ho Chunk and other casinos, and of course spending time with her extensive family.

Fiercely independent, she instilled a strength of will and a love of family into her children. Her strong sense of equality has impacted those who knew her well.

Ginny will be lovingly remembered by her six surviving children, Bonnie (Bob) Browne, Susan (Bill) Schilling, Donald (Annie Miles) Skarda, Randy (Kathy) Skarda, Gini (Leon Moore) Skarda Jager and Marcia (Greg) Miller. She will remain in the hearts of her 16 grandchildren, Monica, Doug, Julie, Dean, Alicia, Jodi, Steve, Lisa, Carrie, Brooke, Shawn, Mike, Jonathan, Brianna, Brandon and Jacob; and step grandson, Travis; as well as 24 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Melvin and David; one sister, Doris; and other extended family and friends.

Ginny was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Donald Skarda, the love of her life. She was also predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Flossie; her beloved daughter, Nancy Haag; a great granddaughter, Sierra; and two brothers, Eldon and Harold.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Lodi Good Samaritan Society for the care given to Ginny.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2019 from 1:00 — 5:00 p.m. at the DANE AMERICAN LEGION POST #503, 124 N. Military Rd, Dane, WI. Memorials may be made to the Virginia M. Skarda Memorial Fund, C/O Summit Credit Union, 304 E. Main St., Waunakee, WI 53597. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
