Art Jam

The Project Maria Art Jam offers both family fun and eating disorder and mental health resources for family members.

The fourth annual fundraiser for Project Maria will take place 5-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Milton High School.

Project Maria formed in 2016 in response to the death of Maria Dorn, a Milton High School senior who struggled with anorexia nervosa.

The Project Maria website states: “Our hope is to inspire our community to embrace a world in which we reach for help when we need it, offer a hand when we perceive need, and end the silence so frequently faced by those battling eating disorders.”

A presentation at about 6 p.m. by Mercyhealth psychologist Amy Sosa will focus on “Girls and Eating Disorders: Exploring Relationships Between Body Image and Food.” Sosa will address the mother/daughter relationship regarding food and body image.

At about 6:30 p.m. Teresa Smith, a professional breeder/trainer, will talk about the benefits of having a pet.

At about 8 p.m. Kortney Karnok will discuss clean eating and body positivity.

The event includes a silent auction, yoga, face painting and more family-friendly fun.

Performers include Nando Buendia on acoustic guitar; vocal performances by the Northside choir, Carolina Herrera, Opal Bilhorn Music Studio, and Julia Kasperzak. Those sharing dramatic readings include: Jim Lyke and “poetry profs” Dan and Becky Hanson.

As part of the exposition, tables will be set up by Project Maria, Milton Public Library, Fueling Strength, NAMI, local poet Samantha Ferol and various art vendors. Materials will be available from Rogers Behavior Health, Aloria and Edelweiss treatment centers, and Janesville Mobilizing for Change.
