Cottage Grove police report a car stolen from a garage on Mourning Drove Drive around 8:20 a.m. June 4.

The garage was open, and the keys were in the vehicle. The owner noticed this almost immediately after it was stolen, and it was reported to 911. Police attempted to stop the vehicle shortly thereafter; however, it fled at a high rate of speed.

A while later, this vehicle and another stolen vehicle were involved in a hit and run in Deerfield where the driver ditched the other stolen car and fled in the car stolen from Cottage Grove. It was last seen at a high rate of speed heading toward Madison.

Cottage Grove police remind residents to lock their cars and take they keys into the house even if the car is in the garage.

On the night of June 4, police reported several vehicles – all unlocked – entered by unknown people in the area of Stoney Hill and Lindsay Way.

Garage door openers were taken along with 400 shotgun shells. It appears that the subjects were looking for a vehicle to steal, police said.

A light colored small SUV, which is believed to be stolen, is suspected of being involved in these thefts and vehicle entries. It was briefly pursued in the village by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
