Emma Dyer

Freshman Emma Dyer scored two goals, but the Monona Grove High School girls soccer team lost 7-4 in the WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal game at Sauk Prairie. Ashley Price and Mady Davis-Troller also scored for the Silver Eagles, which ended the year with a record of 11-7-2.

While the Sauk Prairie High School girls soccer team entered the WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal game with one of the state’s highest scorers in Katelyn Fishnick, it also had a miserly defense that allowed just seven goals all season. The Silver Eagles found a way to get four goals past Sauk Prairie’s Bridget Fabian, but they couldn’t keep their high scoring opponents under control as MG ended its season with a 7-4 defeat June 6.

MG concluded the 2019 campaign with a record of 11-7-2.

MG got off to a strong start six minutes into the game with Emma Dyer tallying off an assist from Maelia Dziedzic. Sauk Prairie scored the next two goals as Lexi Tobias and Ella Schad put the Eagles on top 2-1 in the 14th minute.

Dyer tied the game in the 28th minute with Ashley Price getting the assist, but Camryn Ballweg gave Sauk Prairie a 3-2 halftime with a goal in the 40th minute.

Fishnick, who had 43 goals entering the game, added another two minutes into the second half and Tobias’ second goal of the night put Sauk Prairie on top 5-2 in the 58th minute. Fishnick scored two minutes later to increase the MG deficit to four, but Mady Davis-Troller gave the Silver Eagles some hope with a goal in the 67th minute with Gabi Arnold getting the assist.

But Riley Breunig may have provided the backbreaker as her goal off Fishnick’s assist put Sauk Prairie ahead 7-3 with 15 minutes to play. Vanessa Giallombardo scored MG’s final goal in the 84th minute.

Sophie Wendt, playing in her final high school game before heading off to play women’s college soccer at Southeastern Louisiana, had seven saves for the Silver Eagles. Fabian made 12 stops for Sauk Prairie.

Aside from Wendt, MG will graduate three other seniors: Arnold and defenders Jensen Ruesch and Kyanna Weigel-Sterr. Yet, several underclassmen with varsity experience will return, including freshman Kailey Adamski, who received a significant amount of playing time in net. Other freshmen include Dyer, Lindsey Poels, Mara Hein and Gabby Rivera.

Dzedzic, Davis-Troller, Hailey Munz, Larissa Molstad, Allison Gibbons, Jewel Lindwall and Jade Haase will be seniors on the 2020 roster.

Price, Taylor Ruesch, Giallombardo and Emma Goke will come back as juniors.
