For the second straight year, the Poynette prep softball team boasts the best player in Division 3. Junior Casey Fountain was named this year’s top player by the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association.
Fountain helped lead the Pumas to their second straight WIAA Division 3 state title.
It is the fifth time a Lady Puma has player Player of the Year honors. Fountain joins Carrie Franson (2005, 2006), Kirsten Tomlinson (2011) and Mattie Bredeson (2018).
Fountain, who gave up just three hits in two shutouts at this year’s state tournament, finished the season 23-0 with a 0.21 earned run average, 240 strikeouts and 11 walks. She gave up just four earned runs all season and had 16 shutouts.
At the plate, Fountain batted .537, 30 RBIs, 24 runs, 13 doubles and a home run.
Fountain was joined on the first team by classmate Lucy Cuff, who batted .581 with 31 RBIs, 34 runs, 12 doubles, three home runs and a triple.
Cuff had a walk-off hit in the Pumas’ thrilling extra-inning WIAA sectional final victory over Dodgeville.
The final spots on the Small School All-State first team went to Gracie Malin (Sr., Aquinas), Kenadi Diedrich (Sr., Athens), Sadie Willborn (Sr., Belmont), Ari Charles (Jr., Blair-Taylor), Lauren Steien (Jr., Blair-Taylor), Kenadi Poirier (Sr., Bloomer), Lauren Heisdorf (So., Campbellsport), Alyssa Muench (Sr., Campbellsport), Grace Borne (Jr., Dodgeville), Korra Wasley (Sr., Dodgeville), Lindsey Murphy (Sr., Dodgeville), Emma Quimby (Jr., Grantsburg), Payton Marvin (Jr., Horicon), Jadin Justman (Jr., Horicon), Karissa Laabs (Kr., Horicon), Allison Tillema (Jr., Horicon), Mackenzie Kielblock (Jr., Iola-Scandinavia), Kourtney LeRoy (Sr., Michicot), Lexi Wery (Sr., Southern Door), Kaitlyn Tyznik (Sr., Thorp), Erica Pronschinske (Jr., Tri-County) and Kayla Gray (So., Wisconsin Dells).
Poynette had senior Ashley Hellenbrand and junior Molly Anderson named to the second team.
Hellenbrand batted .426 with 29 RBIs, 32 runs, three doubles, three home runs and a triple, while Anderson hit .520 with 30 RBIs, 30 runs, seven doubles, three triples and two home runs.
The final Player of the Year honors went to Sun Prairie’s Maddie Gardner, (Division 1), Oshkosh North’s Sydney Supple (Division 1), Seymour’s Chloe Evans (Division 2), Horicon’s Allison Tillema (Division 4) and Belmont’s Sadie Willborn (Division 5).
Belmont’s Jeff Hodgson was named the Coach of the Year.
Before being named All-State, Cuff, Anderson, Hellenbrand and Fountain were all tabbed All-District first team.
