ARLINGTON-Robert Edward August Gundlach, age 90, died on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 after an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 22, 1922, to Edward and Elfrieda (Stiemke) Gundlach. Robert graduated from Poynette High School in 1940, and attended University of Wisconsin-Madison for a year. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Naval Air Corp and the Pacific invasion of Okinawa from 1943 until 1946. Robert was united in marriage to Valeria Isabell Schultz on May 23, 1947. He worked for Bell Motors from 1946 until 1949, followed by 38 years at Del Monte Corporation, retiring in 1987.

As a current member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Robert served as a greeter and former elder. Other memberships included Arlington Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, Arlington Fireman’s baseball team, Arlington Curling Club, charter member of Arlington Lion’s Club, volunteer for Arlington voting polls for more than 20 years, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, and the National Rifle Association.

Robert was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who cherished time spent with his family. He was an avid fan of the Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, and the Milwaukee Brewers. A favorite pastime was spending Saturdays at the land in Richland County with his son, Robert Jr.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Valeria; son, Robert E. Gundlach Jr.; daughter, Virginia (Neil) Nordlof; grandchildren, Erika and Bradley Nordlof; step-grandchildren, Nicole Cordonnier, Ken, Dennis, and Kevin Furger; great-grandchild, Andrew Try; step-great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Joel Cordonnier; brothers-in-law, William Hahn Sr. and Herbert (Gayno) Schultz; many nieces and nephews; and family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Franklin; sister, Mildred Budde; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Wilmer and Arlette Schultz, Charles and Patricia Schultz, Evelyn Hahn, Harold and Darlene Lerch, Donovan Schultz, and Cristina (Gundlach) Wolf.

Funeral services were held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, W6906 County Road K, Arlington, at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. Burial was at Zion Cemetery. Visitation was held at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday.
