Celebrating summer’s favorite berry is an annual tradition in Sun Prairie.

Come get fresh strawberries, strawberry sundaes and strawberry shortcake at the June 15 Strawberry Fest.

The family-friendly event is Colonial Club’s biggest fundraiser of the year and helps keep operations going to serve people 55 years and older.

Runners and walkers can kick off the day with the 5K run/walk and 10K run. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group.

Bicyclists won’t be left out with the new 10K Berry EZ bicycle ride—a non-competitive “slow roll” that’s fun for families.

Kim Peterson, Colonial Club’s Volunteer and Special Events Coordinator, says the bike ride is just some of the new fun this year.

“The Strawberry Fest evolves every year and we constantly are having discussions of what is working and what’s not, to make it the best event possible,” Peterson said.

The popular indoor/outdoor craft fair will feature more than 75 vendors. A bigger, better book sale will replace the rummage sale with lots of paperbacks, hardcovers, puzzles and DVD. Raffle ticket holders can win a kayak, personal training package and other great items.

Kids activities—games and an art cart—and a special appearance by Mr. Peanut and the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile will delight the younger crowd.

Nine Thirty Standard, a Sun Prairie-based band—with its blues, country, classics and rock sounds, will entertain festival goers. Adults can enjoy wine and beer at the outdoor tasting tent.

Food includes brats, hot dogs, baked goods and other items that will tame the hunger pangs.

Strawberry Fest, the Brat Bash (Aug. 14) and the ColoniALE Fest (Nov. 1) are Colonial Club’s biggest events that help draw in community members and help them learn about what the club does.

“There is always a stigma with us being a senior center, but this event is for families, young people and seniors. It’s for everyone,” said Laura Jennings, Director of Support Services and Activities.

Strawberry Fest is scheduled on Saturday, June 15 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Colonial Club, 301 Blankenheim Lane, Sun Prairie.
