Sun Prairie High School alumnus Jon Nelson will have his composition, “Mariposa,” performed during the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s (WYSO) Percussion EXTRAVAGANZA! on Saturday, March 1.

Nelson is a 2011 graduate of Sun Prairie High School and a junior at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He is majoring in music composition and was part of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra for three years.

A digital recording of “Mariposa,” along with many other works by Nelson may be heard at soundcloud.com/jon-d-nelson.

The concert will feature the WYSO Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Vicki Jenks and showcase the percussion ensemble in a variety of facets that the audience doesn’t normally get to see in a typical symphony setting.

The percussion ensemble will play with several special guests including world-renowned percussionist Steve Houghton, University of Wisconsin-Madison Saxophone Artist Les Thimmig, and the UW-Madison Afro-Cuban and Western Percussion Ensembles.

For tickets, call the WYSO main office at (608) 263-3320 or e-mail wyso@wyso.music.wisc.edu.
