BRODY TSCHANZ

Waterloo sophomore Brody Tschanz fires a pitch during Waterloo’s 7-4 WIAA Division 3 loss to Columbus.

COLUMBUS — Leading 4-3 midway through four innings the Waterloo baseball team looked to be in position of pulling off an upset of Columbus in the WIAA Division 3 regional semifinals on Tuesday, May 28.

The third-seeded Pirates, coming off a 6-0 win over Montello in the regional quarterfinals, allowed the No. 2 Cardinals to score twice in both the fourth and fifth innings as their 2019 season came to a crashing end losing 7-4.

Waterloo trailed 3-1 going into the top of the fourth inning, but a big rally gave them a one-run lead. The Pirates scored three runs without the luxury of a hit, as Columbus issued six walks in the frame.

Eduardo Rodriguez Lara drew the first free pass, before bases on balls to Brody Tschanz, Jacob Filter, Antonio Unzueta and Alex Sanzenbacher followed. Rodriguez Lara scored on Unzueta’s bases loaded walk, while Tschanz and Filter crossed the plate when Jacob O’Neal’s grounder to short was misplayed for a two-run error giving the Pirates a 4-3 lead.

But Columbus answered with four runs over the next two innings to seal the victory.

Columbus lost to top-seeded Markesan 4-2 in the regional champions.

Waterloo finished 9-11.
