NICK BROZEK

Waterloo McKays outfielder Nick Brozek hauls in a fly ball during a recent game.

The pitching of Utica’s Brock Wanniger was simply too much for the Waterloo McKays to handle.

Wanniger struck out 15 batters and scattered five hits in a complete-game 5-4 win at Firemen’s Park Sunday.

The loss dropped the McKays (2-5 overall) to 1-4 in the Home Talent League Southeast Section.

Even though Wanniger was dealing from the rubber, Waterloo was never out of the game. After falling behind 3-0 and 5-2, the McKays pulled within a run each time.

In the bottom of the seventh Travis Noel and Louis Hensler singled off the Association right-hander, before both scored when Tristan Reulas’ fly to left was misplayed, bringing both runners home to make it a 3-2 game.

Utica pushed two runs across the plate in the seventh on consecutive two-out singles by Christiaan Stokstad and Wanninger.

Wanniger’s RBI proved to be the game-winner as Waterloo rallied for two in the bottom of the eighth.

Ethan Quimby reached on an error, and one out later Ben Vehlow did the same giving the McKays two base runners. Both would later score to cut the Utica lead to 5-4.

But that would be as close as Waterloo would come.

Reulas led the McKays at the plate going 2-for-5.
