Tyler Chadwick threw no-hit baseball for 5 2/3 innings before reaching the 100-pitch count in Marshall’s WIAA Division 3 regional game with top-seeded Markesan. The Cardinals fell 3-2.

MARKESAN — Marshall nearly took down top-seeded Markesan, but in the end, fell one run short of the WIAA Division 3 playoff upset.

The loss overshadowed a no-hit bid by the Cardinals’ Tyler Chadwick. The junior right-hander and West Virginia recruit held the Hornets hitless through 5 2/3 innings before having to leave the game after reaching the 100-pitch count.

Chadwick finished with eight strikeouts.

The eighth-seeded Cardinals (5-16) led for most of the game after a two-out rally in the top of the third. Haiden Nolden got things started with a one-out single, but he was thrown out at second. But Dylan Horstmeyer doubled and scored on Cole Denniston’s RBI single, before Chadwick doubled in Denniston for a 2-0 advantage.

It stayed that way until Markesan (17-5) tied the game in the sixth, then won it on Sage Stellmacher’s RBI double in the seventh.

The game was the last for four Marshall seniors. Playing their final game in the cardinal and white were Nehemiah Senger, Josh Wehking, Collin Buchanan and Joseph Cook.
