LAKE MILLS — Marshall couldn’t figure out Lake Mills pitcher Taylor Roughen in a the WIAA Division 3 softball regional semifinals.

Roughen struck out 15 batters and finished with a four-hitter as the No. 2 seeded L-Cats ended the No. 10 Cardinals’ year with a 9-1 victory.

The loss comes on the heels of Marshall’s 6-5 upset of No. 7 Watertown Luther Prep.

“I think that approach has been something our players have done well most of the season,” said Marshall head coach Erin Young. “It isn’t easy to keep the intensity when things are not going your way in the win/ loss column like it was in years past. We are all very proud of them for not giving up on themselves. It was needed in a post season game when things were very much back and forth.”

Marshall finished the year 6-15.

The Cardinals played from behind all night as Lake Mills (17-4) scored seven runs over the first three innings.

Meanwhile, Marshall didn’t help its cause defensively, committing six errors which led to four unearned runs.

Marshall avoided being shut out scoring once in the top of the sixth. Aubrie Kappes reached on an error, then scored on Skyla Michalak’s two-out RBI single.

“We often talk of the postseason being a “different season or second season” simply because it is a new animal. We talk about taking the little things from the regular season that the players have learned and experienced and use that to win each game moving forward,” said Young.

Hailey Erdmann suffered the pitching loss. The junior right-hander struck out two and walked two while giving up 11 hits and five earned runs.

Lake Mills advanced to the sectional semifinal following a 9-2 win over No. 3 Lakeside Lutheran last Thursday.
