When one thinks of sports in June, high school basketball typically isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.

Warrior fans who did have basketball on their mind, though, were treated last Thursday to a sneak peek of the 2019-20 Waunakee boys’ basketball team. The Warriors hosted some of the top programs in the state last week – Madison East, Sussex Hamilton and Kimberly – for a round-robin summer basketball competition.

“We just thought it might be good to get four of the best programs together…” said Waunakee’s Head Basketball Coach Dana MacKenzie. “It was a good night.”

Though the atmosphere was a relaxed one, the experience was meaningful for a young Warrior squad. Waunakee will need to find replacements for a large departing senior class, including three of the team’s top four scorers from last season.

“We’re young and inexperienced; we just need to play together…” added MacKenzie. “We’re looking to find out who our leaders are… Just trying to get a feel for each other. That’s what our June is about.”
