Metcalfe’s Market delivered more than 600 brats to the Waunakee Senior Center this weekend, so that members could take part in the World’s Largest Brat Fest.
The gesture allowed those unable to attend the event engage in its festivities.
“We wouldn’t be able to get everyone into Brat Fest because some require walking assistance,” said Senior Services Director Cindy Mosiman. “So something like this is pretty special.”
A hundred and twenty sausages were delivered by uniformed service personnel, Friday morning. When the servicemen attempted to make a discreet exit by retreating out the back of the building, Mosiman insisted that the service members say hello to her friends and colleagues at the center.
According to Mosiman, they were met with overwhelming applause.
“This generation really appreciates service,” Mosiman said. “And they look at Memorial Day as being more than just a three-day weekend. I think the holiday touches a lot of them personally.”
An additional 80 brats were delivered to Waunakee earlier in the week, so that residents in the Meals on Wheels program could enjoy something from Madison’s three-day festival as well. The remaining brats were delivered to the center Sunday morning, by volunteers of Metcalfe’s.
“It was really nice of them,” Mosiman said. “And I think all of the residents enjoyed it. So I hope we can work it out where we’ll be able to do this again next year.”
Funding for the event was provided by the Rotary Club of Waunakee.
