One down, one to go.

The Waunakee boys’ golf team advanced in their WIAA Regional contest this past Tuesday, placing third overall at Cherokee Country Club. With another strong performance at their WIAA Sectional, the Warriors could earn a spot at University Ridge for the State meet.

Needing a top-four finish to advance onto sectionals, Waunakee leaned on steady play throughout their lineup – with all five golfers placed in the top 14 out of a field of 40 – to outpace fourth-place Mount Horeb by a wide margin.

Waunakee’s score of 326 was 10 strokes better than the Vikings, but trailed both Middleton and Verona by seven strokes.

Leading the way for the Warriors was Sean Murphy, who shot a three-over-par 75 to tie with Middleton’s Tommy Kriewaldt and Verona’s Cale Rufenacht for medalist honors. Waunakee also got a top-10 finish from Joe Guerrera, who shot an 82 on the windy and brisk Tuesday.

Rounding out the scores on the day, Jacob Werlein shot an 84 to tie for 12th place, while Ryan Johnson and Luke Humphrey each shot an 85, which was good for a 14th-place tie.

Waunakee heads into their final stretch of the season ranked highly by the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin; in their Week 7 rankings, the Warriors were tied for eighth in the state with Wauwatosa.

The stakes were even higher for the Warriors on the following Tuesday at their WIAA Sectional meet, held at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. With a top-two finish as a team, Waunakee would earn their first trip to State since 2017. The results of Tuesday’s meet were not available for this week’s edition; a full recap will be included next week.

Should the Warriors emerge from their sectional meet bound for State, they’ll tee off early on Tuesday morning at University Ridge Golf Course to begin the State Tournament.
