Obituary: Mary Avalone

Mary Frances Avalone, nee Stevenson, born Nov. 4, 1928, entered eternal rest on Aug. 10, 2014, at age 85 after a courageous, roller coaster ride. She relocated to Waunakee, Wis., in June 2011 to be near her family. Mary derived much fulfillment during her more than 50 year membership in Girl Scouts USA. She loved crocheting, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary was known by many as Nana due to her big heart and patience.

Obituary: Robert Ziegler

Robert M. “Bob” Ziegler, age 68, of Waunakee, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born in Madison on March 15, 1946, the son of Raymond and Marie (Endres) Ziegler. Bob graduated from Waunakee High School in 1964. He served with the U.S. Army from 1965 until 1971. He married the love of his life Linda (Adler) on Oct. 26, 1968, and was employed by Endres Manufacturing Company for 46 years. Bob was very active in the community with membership in the Waunakee Jaycees, Lions Club, FFA Alumni and Rotary. He was one of the original founding members of the Waunakee Soccer Club and was instrumental in getting boys and girls soccer into Waunakee High School. Bob was a proud member of the Waunakee Fire Department for 32 years. He enjoyed golf, boating at their lake home, all Badger sports, hunting, and volunteering at St. John’s school and church where he was a member. Most importantly, Bob loved being a grandfather and watching all of the sports in which his grandchildren were involved. He took great pride in being part of the Rotary Christmas Light display each year and hosting an annual 4th of July party at his lake home for his classmates and friends.

Donald (Donnie) “Tic” Hewitt, age 72, died on Monday, July 28, 2014, at his home in Dane following a brief illness. He was born on the family farm in Dane on Aug. 26, 1941, to George and Mary (Pape) Hewitt. Donnie lived on the family farm for his entire life and loved farming. He enjoyed gardening, classic cars, sports and his family. He gave generously to many charities over the years. Donnie faced his illness with a steadfast determination.

Joyce Caldwell of Middleton/Sauk-Prairie began her journey to be with her Lord on Friday, July 25, 2014, after combatting Parkinson’s Disease for 25 years. Her positive outlook on life earned her many friends, and helped greatly as she strove to live life fully. While still in the experimental stage she braved having deep brain stimulators inserted to enhance her quality of life.

Obituary: Albert Deans

Albert R. “Punk” Deans, age 80, of Dane died on Friday June 27, 2014, at his home in Dane. He was born to Albert and Regina (Bollig) Deans on Sept. 27, 1933. He married Joan Meffert on Feb. 19, 1955, at St. John’s Catholic Church, in Waunakee Wis. They lived on the family farm for the past 59 years. He was very active in the community. Punk was on the Board of Directors for the State Bank of Lodi, the Dane Village Board and was the church Trustee for Blessed Trinity Catholic Parish. He was very active in the community and enjoyed volunteering at Blessed Trinity Parish by doing odd jobs. He was known to tour the country roads visiting area farmers and checking out the farm crops and activities. Punk loved farming and received the most enjoyment in raising tobacco with his family, nieces, nephews and any nearby neighbor or friend who wanted to help. He loved to laugh, tell jokes and work together. Of course at the end of a long day working in the tobacco field planting, cultivating, harvesting or stripping tobacco, he loved enjoying a cold beer with all.

Marilyn Chase-Werner

Marilyn Chase-Werner, age 84, of Waunakee, Wis. passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Waunakee Manor. She was born on Dec. 21, 1929, in Rockford, Ill, the daughter of John and Ruth Barber. Marilyn married David A. Chase on Dec. 4, 1948, in Rockford. He predeceased her in April of 1990. She married John F. Werner in March of 1992 and he predeceased her in June of 2013. Marilyn was a Salvation Army officer for 43 years. She loved angels and had a collection and program she presented to various women’s groups. Marilyn was named Woman of the Year for St. Joseph, Mo. Business and Professional Women’s Club and “District Woman of the Year” in 1982.

Kevin A. Pertzborn, age 38, of Dane, died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 10, 2014. He was born on June 1, 1975 in Madison, the son of Jerry and Dorothy (Eckstein) Pertzborn. After graduating from Lodi High School in 1993, Kevin worked for his father at Pertzborn Plumbing and became a Master Plumber in 2002. He was very organized and meticulous in everything he did. Kevin enjoyed attending sporting events, fishing, snowshoeing, and just being outdoors. He collected antiques, restored furniture, and even renovated the home he lived in.

Obituary: Lucille Wipperfurth

Lucille G. Wipperfurth, age 93, of Waunakee, passed away with her family by her side, on April 23, 2014, at the UW Hospital. She was born in Middleton, Wis. on Nov. 22, 1920, to Joseph and Margaret (Laufenberg) Ziegler. She was married to Jerome Wipperfurth on Nov. 26, 1942, and he preceded her in death in 1998. Jerome and Lucille farmed north of Waunakee on Easy Street for 38 years. Lucille also worked for the State of Wisconsin for 22 years. In 1981 they moved into Waunakee to enjoy their retirement. They were blessed with 56 years of marriage. Lucille was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and its Christian Mothers. Lucille loved farming, cards, gardening, cooking and going on casino trips. Most of all she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joan M. (Wipperfurth) Statz age 76 of Waunakee/Westport, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at UW Hospital on April 17, 2014. She was born on Nov. 3, 1937, in Waunakee to Anthony and Christine Wipperfurth. She married Harold Statz on Feb. 11, 1958. Joan cleaned houses for many years and also helped her daughter in a furniture restoration business. She truly enjoyed the Green Bay Packers, especially watching Clay Matthews, the UW Marching band, Las Vegas trips and their cabin in Necedah, Wis. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.

Maurice Ellis

Waunakee – Maurice (Maurie) Ellis, age 79, died at home Monday, April 7, 2014, after a courageous, two year battle with colon cancer. Born on April 4, 1935, to Wayne and Eunice (Rasmussen) Ellis, Maurie spent his early years in the Brooklyn, WI area, moving to Madison in 1949. Maurie attended Central HS and graduated from UW stout in 1957. He served in the US Army from 1957-1959. On the 28th of December, 1957, Maurie married his college sweetheart May Katherine (Kay) Kennedy at St. Aloysius Church in Sauk City. Maurie and Kay started Ellis True Value Hardware Store, in the Westmoreland area of Madison, in 1961 and operated the business until 1990. Maurie then worked at Ace Hardware on Willie Street until retirement.

Waunakee: Sargent Heath III, age 77, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Meriter Hospital where he received the best care available. Sarg was born in Worcester, Mass, graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. Sarg married Suzanne Thurston on June 12, 1958, and had two children. He is survived by Sue; his son Jeffrey Heath; and daughter Jennifer (Matthew) Parnell. He is also survived by four wonderful grandchildren Melody and Reuben Heath, Morgan and Ryanne Parnell. Visitation will be Friday, April 11 from 5-7 at Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee. Debra Y. “Debbie” Meyer, age 60, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at UW Hospital. She was born on May 11, 1953, the daughter of Douglas and Lois (Hodgson) Muir. She married the love of her life, Jerry Meyer, on June 21, 1980. Together, they raised their two children, Melissa and Scott. Debbie was employed by the State of Wisconsin Workers Compensation for 34 years until her retirement. She will be fondly remembered for her love of family, her unselfishness and willingness to put others before herself. She is one of the greatest angels heaven will ever receive.

Helen began her career with General Electric at that time. The marriage was dissolved and Helen moved her family to Connecticut.

Morgan E. Jones, age 93, of Madison and Waunakee passed away on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Waunakee Manor Nursing Home in Waunakee, WI. Morgan was born April 19, 1920, in Auroraville, Wis., the son of Alvin and Nellie (Davis) Jones. He graduated from Berlin High School in 1938 and worked on the family farm for several years before attending college. Morgan graduated from UW – Madison School of Business in 1946. He spent his career as an insurance agent, receiving his CPCU designation in 1964. He was one of the founders of the Dairyland Chapter of CPCU and served as president from 1973 to 1974. Morgan worked for several insurance companies before establishing his own insurance agency, Consumers Insurance Service, Inc. in Madison, WI in 1971. He retired in 2005. Morgan was united in marriage to the love of his life, Alta Gaylord, on June 19, 1948, in Berlin, Wis. They resided in Stevens Point, Wis., until 1967 when they moved to Madison. Morgan and Alta were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Madison. Morgan enjoyed polka music, reading, dancing, traveling to many countries, and wintering in Florida. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family at their lake home on Lake Camelot, special holiday and birthday celebrations and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was employed at Madison Gas & Electric for 40 years and retired in 2003. He married Waltraud Wuth in 1962 and they had resided in Waunakee for the past 50 years. He enjoyed watching horse racing.

Obituary: Mark Viksjo

Mark Harvey Viksjo, age 70, of Waunakee died suddenly on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at his home in Waunakee. He was born on June 13, 1943, in Milwaukee to Claus and Laura (Kisker) Viksjo. He attended Milton College, Morehead St. College and the UW at Madison. On Sept. 13, 2002, he married the love of his life, Lily Janeen Sumwalt, following 25 years of courtship. Mark resided in Madison for 31 years and had resided in Waunakee the past three years. He retired from Madison Kipp Corp. after 31 years of employment and worked for JBM Protection and Patrol for nine years. He also worked as a substitute crossing guard for the schools. He loved music and playing his guitar and was a member of the Musicians Union. His favorite pastime was being with family and watching old time movies and reading.

Jean Elizabeth Enge, age 76, of Waunakee passed away on Dec. 16, 2013, at Homestead Living. Jean was born on Feb. 24, 1937, to John and Philomene (Miller) Heinz of Waunakee where she lived her entire life. She married Nathan Enge on Dec. 9, 1954, and he preceded her in death in February 2013. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Catholic Church and a member of Legion Post 360 Auxiliary. Jean was St. John’s Parish business administrator for 29 years until her retirement. Prior to that, she worked at The Waunakee Tribune for many years and also at the Triangle Restaurant.

Beloved daughter of Johanna Novotny and Tom Novotny of Waunakee, Sarah was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on Dec. 13, 1988. Treasured sister of Thomas, Christopher and Matthew. Cherished granddaughter of Margaret (Milwaukee, Wis.) and the late Thomas Novotny Sr., and Virginia (Oak Park, Ill.) and the late Dr. Frank J. Madden, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends, and Nathan, the love of her life.

Obituary: Eugene Cook

Eugene Roger Cook, 77 of Waunakee, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the Golden Living Center, Beaver Dam, surrounded by his wife Judy, his beloved beagle Tessa, and his Golden Living family by his side. Gene had been ill for a long time and God finally called him home.  He was born Dec. 19, 1936 the son of Earl Robert and Myrtle (Hardy) Cook in Boscobel.  Gene and his family spent a short time in Madison and Dane, but spent most of his youth in Muscoda where he attended school. He completed his education when he enlisted in the Army in 1959 and was discharged in 1962.  Gene then went to work at American Motors in Kenosha. After his retirement in Gene went to work at Wal-Mart for 22 years, which was his favorite job. In 1964 he met his wife Judy Weldy and they were married on May 21, 1966, in Muscoda.  The couple has two children, Michael and Michelle. Gene and Judy loved to travel and together they managed apartments in Madison and Seattle, his favorite city.  Gene was a devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.  He made friends wherever he went.

Obituary: Harry Winter

Harry Winter, age 66, of Dane died suddenly on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at his home. He was born in Kansas City, Mo., to Harold and Grace (Hohmann) Winter. Harry served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967 and was proud of his service. He married Connie Taylor and they resided in the Dane area. He was employed as the fleet manager for the City of Middleton until his retirement in 2008. He worked for many years building and maintaining the police cars and the ambulance for the city of Middleton. His favorite pastimes included fishing and hunting, and watching Badger and Packers football. He was also known for both owning and driving fast cars.

Jane was the daughter of Robert J. Priebe, Sr. and Mercedes (Sadie) Priebe. She was employed with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for 35 years – and never had a bad driver’s license photo. She worked in several departments over her career and made many lasting friends.

Donna (Habermann) Schmidt, age 64, of Madison and Waunakee, died on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013. at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison following a brief illness. Donna was born in West Allis, Wis., on Oct. 11, 1948, to Chester and Anna Mae (Russell) Habermann. Donna and Ken Schmidt were together for 47 years and raised their four children in Waunakee. She was later employed at Marshall Erdman in Waunakee for 25 years and was a member of the Carpenter’s Local 2190. Donna and Ken lived in Waunakee for a number of years and more recently resided in Madison.

Cecilia M. Endres, age 91, died Oct. 4, 2013, at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie. She was born on Jan. 19, 1922, in the Town of Dane, the daughter of the late Louis and Mathilda (Kurth) Miller, the last surviving child of eight. She was united in marriage to Albert J. Endres on May 2, 1944. The couple farmed in the Town of Springfield for many years. She was a member of St. Martin's and St. Aloysius Council of Catholic Women and Springfield Homemakers Club, and also volunteered at Sauk Prairie St. Vincent DePaul.

Obituary: Brian Hicks

Brian Hicks passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013. Taken from us way too early in life at the age of 30, he was a great son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson, and friend. He had those great qualities of loyalty and kindness that made him always think of those closest to him when he did anything, and always cared deeply about what we thought and how we felt. Brian will be painfully missed by all of us, but will forever remain in a special place in our hearts where we can talk to him anytime of the day.

Obituary: Yvonne Ziegler

Yvonne Endres Ziegler, age 51, left us all too soon and suddenly on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013. She was a loving, hard-working wife and mother, who rose at 4 a.m., did farm work, taught pre-school at St. John the Baptist School in Waunakee (for 29 years) and then would travel hours to watch one of her daughters’ sporting events before falling into bed and starting all over again. She loved ice cream, the Amish, her newspaper, and adventures on her three-wheeled motorcycle. She never complained and always had time to be a friend to anyone in need.

June (Beverly) Hoffman was called to Heaven Oct. 1, 2013, to supervise God’s cleaning crew. June was born to Herman and Katherine Lange on June 1, 1928, in Madison, Wis.
