Beer and wine tasting

Searching for some belated Valentine’s Day plans? Could you see yourself enjoying a nice brew or wine with an appetizer pairing? If so, the Lodi Rotary Club has just the event for you next week.

The Rotary’s first annual wine and beer tasting fundraiser will be on Thursday, Feb. 16, at Lucky’s on the Lake, W11579 Highway V, Lodi. Starting at 7 p.m., the evening is sure to be one filled with good spirits.

Doug Richmond, a Rotary member, said seeing how successful similar events have been, such as the Lodi and Lake Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce’s Wine Walk, encouraged Rotary’s creation of the event.

“We have been throwing around the idea for a couple of years and basically it was time to stop talking and do it,” Richmond said. “The Wine Walk has been very successful and we thought adding beer to the wine would appeal to more people.”

There will be beers from Lucky’s, Wisconsin Brewing, Hillboro Brewery and Port Huron Brewery. As for wine, there will be a supply from Baraboo Hills, Weggy Winery, Rock N Wool Winery and Burr Oak Winery. Representatives from each will be in attendance to talk about their products and answer questions.

In addition to the drinks, a large selection of appetizers to complement each wine and beer will be available. Each attendee will also receive their choice of a beer or wine sampler glass.

“The timing of this event around Valentine’s Day is to give couples an opportunity to do something different to celebrate and hopefully have some fun,” Richmond said. And, although the event may be an alternative to the traditional dinner date, Richmond noted the affair is not only for couples and is open to anyone.

As for the future of the event, if all goes well, it may happen again.

“We know that it will probably take some time to build this to its capacity, but we are committed to continue this in the future,” Richmond said. “When people have a good time at an event, they talk about it with friends and that is how we hope to build this event.”

The club has a limited number of 200 tickets for sale. Tickets are $45 per person and are available from Rotarians, at Lucky’s or by contacting Richmond at (608) 370-1135. There will also be some tickets available at the door that evening.

The funds from the evening will go towards local community projects, the Rotary Youth Exchange program and scholarships.

“We would like to increase our scholarship fund and are always looking for new projects in the Lodi area to get involved with,” Richmond said.

He also said the club may consider donating to PolioPlus, a Rotary International program that began in 1985 aimed at eradicating polio from the globe.
