It was a strong week for the Red Hawk cross country squads. Heading up to Fort Atkinson Thursday for the Koshkonong Klassic, both the boys and girls teams came away in second place with the boys finished with 49 points to the girls’ 54. Milton followed up with dual fifth-place finishes at the Albany Baertschi Invite Saturday. The girls finished with 134 points with the boys taking 168.
The girls squad finished with 134 — tied with Evansville. Samantha Benson led the Red Hawks in 14th with a time of 23:11.3. Samantha Henry was five seconds behind at 23:16.4 for 17th and Alayna Borgwardt finished in the top 20 at 20th place with 23:32.5.
Anneka Dorn ran 24:39.4 to take 37th, while Lexi Slagle took 53rd with 25:09.9 to finish off the Red Hawks scoring runners. Darby Schabacker took 67th with a time of 25:44.0. Presley Belk rounded out all Milton runners in 73rd with 26:09.3.
While the boys finished with more points than the girls — 168 to 134 — the boys had a higher overall finisher as Devin Woodcock cracked the top 10 in 7th place with his time of 18:56.3. The boys had four other runners in the top 50 — Matthew Messer in 33rd (19:57.5), Davis Turk in 41st (20:14.7), Brendan Harbrecht in 44th (20:19.1) and Trey Smith in 48th (20:22.7).
Alex Pember finished in 67th place with 20:46.5. Travis Smith took 71st with 20:55.0.
Traveling to Fort Atkinson Thursday for the Koshkonong Klassic, the Red Hawks came away with dual runner-up finishes. Fort Atkinson came away with the girls race while McFarland won the boys.
The girls had three top-10 finishers — Benson took second overall with 21:33, Henry ran 21:58 for sixth and Borgwardt finished ninth with 22:18. Dorn took 15th overall with 22:43 while Schabacker took 23th with 23:28 for the scoring runners.
For the boys, Woodcock led with a fifth-place finish with a time of 17:49. Turk also finished in the top-10, taking eighth with 18:44.
Six more runners had top-20 finishes — Trey Smith in 11th (18:54), Matthew Messer in 13th (19:00), Harbrecht in 15th (19:08), Travis Smith in 16th (19:13), Pember in 18th (19:28), and Kaleb Martin in 20th (19:37). Reidar Snow finished 21st with a time of 19:51.
The Red Hawks will next race at the conference tournament Friday at the Lake Farm County Park in Madison.
