It’s been a while since the college news were published in the Herald-Independent and McFarland Thistle.
Here’s a look at some news about local students that colleges have sent our way over the past few months:
Baldwin Wallace scholarship
Kyle Elliot, McFarland, was among 680 students to earn a scholarship at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. Elliot, a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy majoring in music theatre, earned the Donald & Connie Rebar Scholarship and the William F. Grady Scholarship.
UW-Whitewater scholarships
UW-Whitewater awarded nearly $2.2 million in scholarships for 2020-21, including the following local students:
Robert Byrne, Cottage Grove, who is studying computer science, received the Chancellor Scholars Scholarship.
Caenan Cremeens, McFarland, who is studying media arts and game development and art, received the Chancellor Scholars Scholarship.
Anna Falkowska, Monona, who is studying mathematics, received the following scholarships: WF Johnston Computer Sciences Scholarship; William C Beck Scholarship.
Hugo Gonzalez, McFarland, who is undeclared, received the King Chavez Scholarship (Admissions) scholarship.
Nicholas Hall, McFarland, who is studying marketing, received the following scholarships: King Chavez Scholarship (Admissions); Minority Business.
Rachel Hansen, McFarland, who is studying music, received the Grace A Prugger Scholarship.
Cole Lindwall, Cottage Grove, who is studying biology, received the Chancellor Scholars Scholarship.
Anthony Reamer, Cottage Grove, who is studying accounting and finance, received an accounting scholarship.
Kozette Rosenthal, Madison, who is studying social work, received a general merit scholarship.
Giovanni Urso, Madison, who is studying cccupational safety, received the Gib Harris Safety Scholarship.
St. Norbert dean’s list
Reagan Engels of Cottage Grove, Daniel Scaife of Madison and McFarland’s Sara Dillon, Erin Eggers, McKenna Lacy and Jonah Pribbenow, made the dean’s list at St. Norbert College in De Pere. In order to make the Dean’s List, students must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average.
UW-Milwaukee graduates
A number of local students graduated from UW-Milwaukee in December, including the following:

Milwaukee School of Engineering fall honors
Two area students received academic honors from the Milwaukee School of Engineering this fall:
Pierce Varney, Cottage Grove, made the honors list. Varney is studying for a bachelor of science in actuarial science.
Cody Jaworski, Monona, made the dean’s list with high honors. Cody is studying for a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.
Undergraduate students who have earned at least 30 credits and have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher (out of 4.0) are on the dean’s list. Students who have maintained a 3.70 or higher receive “high honors.”
Undergraduate students on the honors list have earned a GPA of at least 3.20 (out of 4.0) for this quarter.
Ripon College honor societies
Area students were named to various honor societies during the Awards Convocation at Ripon College in the spring of 2020:
- Miye Aoki-Kramer of Madison, Wisconsin was named to the Pi Lambda Theta (Education) honor society
- Keara Duffy of McFarland, Wisconsin was named to the Phi Sigma Iota (Foreign Language) honor society
- Maeve Kim of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin was named to the Laurel (All Disciplines) honor society
Summer 2020 UW- La Crosse graduates
Dee Reed, Cottage Grove, graduated with a bachelor of arts as a communication studies major with a media studies emphasis
Camille Hermanson, McFarland, graduated with a bachelor of science. Hermanson was a psychology major and graduated with honors.
UW-Stout University Foundation Scholarship
Adeline Kubitz, a Cottage Grove student at UW-Stout studying hotel, restaurant and tourism management and real estate property management, received the following scholarships: Teresa M. Schulz Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management Scholarship, Weidner Center Scholarship
UW-Eau Claire freshman scholarships
The following four freshmen at UW-Eau Claire received scholarships:

Knox College dean’s list
Two area students, both studying anthropology and sociology at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, made the college’s dean’s list in fall of 2020. Elizabeth Castaneda and Gabriella Castaneda of Cottage Grove each made the list, earning at least a 3.6 grade point average for the term.
