More than 60 Monona area businesses, organizations and individuals are crowed as being the Best of Monona for 2017.
Our annual reader survey asked respondents to name their choices in dozens of categories, ranging from food to professional services.
We made a few changes this year, with the addition of six categories – Best Happy Hour, Best Bloody Mary, Best Dinner, Best Community Event, Most Attractive Building and Best Chicken Wings.
To find out who won in these categories, as well as all the others, read through this special section and be sure to patronize the winners. They are part of the reason Monona is a great place to live, work and play.
Andy Gundlach, owner of more than 30 Anytime Fitness clubs in the greater Madison area, is the 2017 Best Businessman winner. Gundlach grew up in Cottage Grove and graduated from Monona Grove High School. In September, Gundlach was named Anytime Fitness Club Operator of the Year. It’s his third time winning the award, claiming the honor in 2011 and 2012. He’s the only franchise owner ever to win the award more than once. Company headquarters are at 6000 Monona Drive. Sherry Hayes, of Tully’s II, 6401 Monona Drive, is once again the Best Businesswoman. She helps to ensure that at Tully’s II, customers get the best deal in town – tasty food and a comfortable atmosphere without breaking the bank. The mission of Tully’s II is to make the customers king, serving the best food and drinks available in a clean and safe atmosphere. Runner-up: Katie Udelhoven, Princeton Club.
Former Mayor Bob Miller was chosen Best Politician. Later this month, Miller and his wife, Pam Hoffman, will move to Ireland. “I love the outdoors. The Sheep's Head Peninsula has 80 miles of walking paths,” he said to a group of men at the Monona Senior Center earlier this year. “I’m also an extrovert, and Pam is an introvert, so we had to find a place where I could be Wild Bob and she could be Quiet Pam.” Runner-up: Jim Busse.
Best Police Officer
Walter Ostrenga has been Monona’s police chief for the past 13 years and was namd Best Police Officer in the 2017 voting. He parlayed his two years in the U.S. Army to accomplish his goal of becoming a police officer. “My dad was a volunteer fire chief, and I had a strong sense of public service,” he said. Ostrenga served as a military policeman in the Army from 1975-77, leaving as a Spec 4. Runner-up: Adam Nachreiner.
Fire Chief Scott Sullivan, chosen as the Best Firefighter/EMT, heads the Fire/EMS Department and supervises paid-on-call firefighters, along with the full-time employees who serve as firefighters, paramedics and fire inspectors. The department is responsible for inspecting all commercial, industrial and multi-unit residential buildings in the city to ensure compliance with state and local fire codes. Runner-up: Brenden Kornell.
Barb Trapp, a second-grade teacher at Winnequah School, was voted 2017’s Best Teacher. Runner-up: Jenny Fonner.
Best Improvement of the Year
Anytime Fitness was named the Best Improvement of the Year. Owner Andy Gundlach moved the company’s southern Wisconsin corporate office to Monona in the spring of 2016. The corporate office is located at 6000 Monona Drive, Suite 204, above the Monona gym location. The corporate office brought 10 full-time and 20 part-time jobs to the city. Runner-up: Monona Drive.
Best Civic Organization
Monona East Side Business Alliance, 5900 Monona Drive, Suite 302, is the 2017 Best Civic Organization. The Monona East Side Business Alliance supports commerce by promoting its members and community health for the area’s overall prosperity. It is a private, nonprofit, membership-driven organization comprised of more than 325 businesses, charitable organizations and higher education institutions. Resources and activities include business news, networking events, economic development resources, job creation and communication in the Monona East Side community. Runner-up: Madison Monona Lioness Club.
Best Apartment Rentals
Treysta on the Water, 320 W. Broadway, was chosen Best Apartment Rentals in the annual reader survey. Treysta on the Water is a lifestyle destination located on five water-fronted acres. Heritage Monona, 111 Owen Road, earned the 2017 honor as Best Assisted Living/Senior Housing. Options for seniors include independent living, assisted living, enhanced assisted living and memory care. Amenities include a community room with private dining room, community pub and patio with grill, fitness center, beauty salon, library and computer center, daily activities, transportation service and onsite management. Runner-up: Frost Woods I and II.
Best Community Event
The Monona Community Festival, which just wrapped up another successful year, is the Best Community Event in Monona. Held July 3-4 each year, the festival features a carnival, art fair, live music, children’s activities, hole-in-one contest, keg toss, food and drink, car show, wife carrying competition and fireworks. Runner-up: Memorial Day Parade
Most Attractive Building
Treysta on the Water, 320 W. Broadway, has everything it takes to be named Most Attractive Building. Opened in 2015, Treysta on the Water is Green Built certified with the first commercial and residential Clean Clear Waters designation. Lindsey Markgraf of Tully’s II, 6401 Monona Drive, is the 2017 Best Waitress/Waiter in the reader survey. Fast and friendly service are the hallmarks for this award. Runner-up: Becca Smith of Tully’s II.
There are plenty of drinks from which to choose, and no matter the selection, Guy Devitt of Waypoint Public House, 320 W. Broadway, Suite E, is the guy to get it for you. Devitt was selected as the Best Bartender in the annual reader survey. Runner-up: Donald Hocking of Tully’s II.
If it’s a hamburger you’re hungry for, head on over to Tully’s II, 6401 Monona Drive. The restaurant was selected as having the Best Hamburger in this year’s survey. Best French Fries
Tully’s II, 6401 Monona Drive, lets out all the stops with its french fries, picked as the Best French Fries, according to those who voted in the annual competition.
