The Monona Braves will have bragging rights until at least Aug. 4.
In their first battle of the season, the Braves topped rival Cottage Grove 5-1 in a Home Talent Baseball League game in Cottage Grove on Sunday.
Braves starter Zac Najacht earned a complete game victory with two strikeouts and no walks, while allowing just one earned run on nine hits.
Offensively, Monona’s Karl Raffel went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Robert Parman was a perfect 4-for-4. For Cottage Grove, Pat Paulus went 2-for-5.
Monona took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Cottage Grove cut the Braves’ lead to 3-1 in the seventh, but the Braves answered with two runs in the eighth.
The Braves and Firemen will meet again on Sunday, Aug. 4 at Ahuska Park in Monona.
