The win didn’t secure Monona’s place in the Home Talent Baseball League playoffs, but it confirmed the team belongs in the postseason.
Sitting in the fourth of four playoff spots available in the Eastern Section, the Braves played at Poynette, Sunday, to face one of the three teams ahead of them in the Eastern standings. Monona rose to the occasion and beat Poynette, 7-0, creating a tie for the third playoff spot.
Zac Najacht pitched a complete-game shutout for Monona, allowing eight hits and one walk, while striking out two.
After a scoreless first inning, Josh Gauwitz hit a solo home run to give Monona a 1-0 lead in the second. Vince Schmitz followed with a single and scored on a Kody Parman single and the Braves were up 2-0.
Neither team was able to score over the next three innings, but Monona eventually removed any doubt on the game’s decision. The Braves added an insurance run in the sixth inning, when a Bryce Kalscheur double scored Tony Grannis and increased their lead to 3-0.
Monona added to its lead in the eighth, when Grannis started the inning with a double and Fernando Espinosa followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Grannis scored his second run of the game on Vince Schmitz’s double and the Braves were up 4-0.
