The Waunakee High School Alpine Ski Team starts their season with high expectations as they build on last year’s great performance. The men’s team placed 4th at state in 2021 and returns 3 top racers, Reed Schuster, August Johnson, and Sam Hogland. Coach Slattery is looking for several underclassmen to continue their improvement and help the team return to Mt. La Crosse. The women’s team will be anchored by Ava Ludwig who competed at State last season as an individual.

The Wisconsin High School Alpine Racing Association’s season opener was held at Tyrol Basin with the teams competing in Giant Slalom. The boys team finished fourth overall with Sam Hogland and Reed Schuster finishing 1st and 2nd. August Johnson placed 11th, with Jaxon Wipperfurth and Paul Burczyk finishing 35th and 36th. The top 4 finishers for each school’s results are combined for the team score.

The girls team ended the first night in fifth place. Ava Ludwig led the way in 6th place followed by Payton Ross in 27th and Dama Addison in 28th. Waunakee’s team score also included Abigail Truscott placing 39th. Next week, the discipline changes to slalom back at Tyrol Basin.
