Waunakee track and field star Andrew Regnier has committed to compete for the University of North Carolina, according to Regnier’s post on Twitter.
When reached for comment, Regnier said, "I took official visits to five schools, Nebraska, Iowa State, Kentucky, Alabama and UNC. I narrowed it down to Alabama and North Carolina because I thought they had the best combination of academics, athletics and knowledgeable coaches. I ended up choosing UNC because of their highly rated computer science program and my overall fit with the team."
A middle-distance runner, Regnier was named the 2021-22 Gatorade Wisconsin Boys’ Track & Field Player of the Year last summer. He is the Waunakee athlete to receive the award.
More recently, Regnier ran a time of 1:51.56 in the 800-meter run for the top time in the U.S. at the Tracksmith Twilight in Chicago, setting a new personal record by more than two seconds. Regnier ran for Milwaukee Speed Academy at the meet.
Representing the Warriors at last season’s WIAA Division 1 State Track and Field Meet, Regnier won a state title in the 400-meter run, while also placing fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. His efforts helped the Warriors take fifth as a team.
